Port Moresby, 6th April 2017

6th April was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in the United Nations General Assembly. The adoption of this day signifies the increasing recognition by the United Nations of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development. Further, in the Declaration of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the role of sports for social progress is profoundly acknowledged.

“Sport is an important enabler of the Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations in Papua New Guinea acknowledges the power of sport to mobilize and unite people. It promotes tolerance and respect, empowers women and men, the old and the young, flourishes individuals and communities, and contributes to health, education, and social inclusion objectives. We recognize sport organizations and athletes as valuable partners in promoting and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and are excited to work with them,” said Mr. Roy Trivedy, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea.

To celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the United Nations in Papua New Guinea organized an educational session on the Sustainable Development Goals during the sport event held by the High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea in the Bisini Precinct, Port Moresby. About 200 students from tertiary institutions attended, including the University of Papua New Guinea, the Institute of Business Studies, the Don Bosco Technical Institute, the Port Moresby Technical College, and the International Education Agency Technical and Further Education Training. Participants learned how the Global Goals are linked to people’s lives and were encouraged to promote them.

“Change starts from an individual. Sport can bring that change. Through sports activities, the High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea is committed to promote the well-being of Papua New Guinean citizens as well as to build a healthier nation. The Sustainable Development Goals are an important milestone to guide us for a better future. We are committed to continuously work with the United Nations to help promote the Goals and educate citizens through sport channels,” said Mr. Cornelius Papau, the Regional Development Coordinator, the High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea.
