Port Moresby, 6th April 2017
The United Nations in Papua New Guinea and the Government of Papua New Guinea signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2018-2022, on 6th April 2017, which guides the work of the United Nations System in the country. It outlines the partnership between the United Nations and the Government in support of the 2030 Agenda, and is grounded in national development priorities including the Vision 2050, the Strategy for Responsible Sustainable Development, the Development Strategic Plan 2010-2030, the Medium-Term Development Plan and sectoral strategies. The United Nations undertook a thorough review of its own systems, as well as the situation in the country, to better inform what type of support it should provide and how/where it can contribute most effectively to Papua New Guinea’s development. The UNDAF 2018-2022 was developed in an inclusive and participatory manner through consultations with the Government, as well as development and civil society partners.
The resulting support will be focused in the four outcome areas listed below, which in turn are grounded in the key elements of the Sustainable Development Goals that underpin the achievement of the Government’s Vision 2050. Work in each of the outcome areas will be developed and implemented through partnerships with local, regional, national and international organizations, businesses and communities.
1. People - Inclusive Human Development & Equitable Services
2. Prosperity - Inclusive & Sustainable Growth
3. Planet - Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, Biodiversity Conservation, Strengthened Climate & Disaster Resilience
4. Peace - Promoting Inclusive, Governance, Justice & Peace
“The formulation of this new UNDAF has culminated from a thorough evaluation process undertaken on the existing Framework and a consultative process with the Government stakeholders. The United Nations is applauded for working in collaboration with the Government to now have before us the UNDAF 2018-2022,” said the Hon. Charles Abel, Minister for National Planning and Monitoring. “The key elements of the Sustainable Development Goals – People, Prosperity, Plant, Peace as well as Partnership – are key to the Outcomes of the new UNDAF. It is a unique approach and one that identifies where the UN is best positioned to contribute effectively over the five-year period. Ultimately building a platform for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This too is what PNG is endeavouring,” continued Minister Abel.
“The United Nations is committed to working with the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea, together with other development partners, to improve the lives of all people in the country, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations Development Assistance Framework reflects the shared commitment of the Government of Papua New Guinea and the UN system to maximize our efforts,” said Mr. Roy Trivedy, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea.
