8th PNG Human Rights Film Festival "Look, Know, Act"

8th PNG Human Rights Film Festival is held between 13th and 15th October 2017 at the Moresby Arts Theatre

Strengthening public awareness on human rights since 2010, the 8th annual PNG Human Rights Film Festival is back this weekend at the Moresby Arts Theatre! To make the event accessible to all, admission is free, and free transportation to the festival will be supported by the Gini Goada Foundation, picking-up from Erima (Big Rooster), Tabari Place, Vision City, and by the gate of the University of PNG.

Through this year’s theme, “Look. Know. Act” (Luksave na kirapim wok), the Festival aims to challenge the public to take action to increase respect for human rights in the country, in an individual capacity as well as in association with other.

“The Festival has become the flagship annual human rights awareness event, and this year’s theme speaks to the importance of Freedom of expression which is the cornerstone to democracy, says Festival  committee member, Alithia Barampataz, with the UN Human Rights Office. She emphasizes, that “This year the festival aims to go further by inspiring the public that each of us can make a difference to improve human rights in PNG through our own every day actions.”

Festival goers will have a chance to engage on critical human rights issues, through interactive panel discussions moderated by Alex Rheeney. The programme will feature 17 local and international films over the 3-day festival, on diverse topics from the right to asylum, development and human rights, the right to vote, freedom of expression, girls rights, and business and human rights.

Following the programme in Port Moresby, the Festival will travel to the University of Goroka on 16 to 18 October 2017.

The PNG Human Rights Film Festival 2017 is organized by the United Nations Human Rights Office, The European Union, Transparency International PNG, and the University of Goroka Centre for Social and Creative Media. The Festival is made possible by a range of sponsors, namely, Oxfam PNG, UNDP, UNICEF, US Embassy, Trend Media, The National newspaper, PNG Air, Monpi Coffee, UNWomen, and JICA.
